Weddings are expensive, and unless you’re incredibly lucky, chances are you’re working to a budget of some kind. And for this reason it’s important to know where the budget is best being spent, some areas will demand a little more money but others you can cut back on costs and perhaps even DIY. Here are some examples.

Splurge: The dress and groom’s suit | Where to Splurge and Where to Save When it Comes to Your Wedding

Chances are you’ll spend a lot of time planning your dress, searching through hundreds of options and trying on lots of different styles. You can find less expensive wedding dresses but often it’s good to spend more here to get the look that you’re after. Your grooms suit is another worthy investment, look at custom made suits which will fit his body and work perfectly with his shape rather than something that’s just off the rack. As long as the pair of you feel great within yourselves, many of the other details can be done on more of a budget without it affecting your big day.

Save: Flowers and decorations

Wedding flowers are incredibly expensive, in many weddings they take up a massive part of the budget. But it doesn’t have to be this way – decorate with balloons instead which are much cheaper then you can keep the flowers to a minimum. Or you could grow your own, things like roses and lilies are easy to grow but expensive to buy – so once you get engaged, plant some pretty blooms in your garden and you can cut them off when the time comes! Even supermarket flowers can be cheap if you want to DIY your own arrangements, it will save you heaps of cash.

Splurge: The photographer | Where to Splurge and Where to Save When it Comes to Your Wedding

Even if you can’t afford the most luxurious venue, your photographer will be able to capture beautiful moments and looking back on your wedding album it certainly won’t look like you cut costs there. For most of us, our wedding day passes in a blur and so photos to remember the day are incredibly important. Spend time researching photographers, look through their portfolios and narrow down a few that you like the look of. From there you can see who is available on your wedding day.

Save: Food

Food is an important part of a wedding, but you don’t need to go down the route of a formal three course meal as this can be really pricey – especially if you have a lot of guests. Buffets are always crowd pleasers, they can be done yourself and on a budget with the help of friends and family. Food trucks are another option, they’re more casual than a sit down meal so suit some wedding styles better, and won’t cost you as much either.

Where would you save, and where would you splurge on your wedding?
