The ceremony was at Heinz Chapel in Pittsburgh, PA with the reception at Soldiers and Sailors Museum. We took their portraits at the Cathedral of Learning. The classic architecture was amazing and set the romantic happily ever after, fairy tale mood of the wedding.
Q and A with the couple: Kyleen-Jay Wedding-Soldiers-Sailors Memorial Hall-Museum
Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?
Jay and I wanted our wedding to reflect who we are as a couple. Our goal was to have a fun party with good food and drinks, great music, and lots of dancing. While we didn’t have a specific theme, we wanted a romantic, classy style. In order to achieve this goal, we had gorgeous flowers, lots of candle light, and some up lighting. The color palette for the wedding was blush, peach, ivory, and a little touch of navy blue.
Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?
When Jay and I were looking at different venues, we wanted a place that was beautiful on its own and wouldn’t need much decorating. Soldiers and Sailors Museum was just what we were looking for. The architecture of the building is spectacular, along with the stunning event space. We added up lighting around the doorways of the event hall, floral centerpieces, and lots of candle light scattered amongst each table. Our cookie table was a decoration on its own – it had porcelain platters decorated with delicious cookies and cupcakes, along with a few jars of candy.
What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?
We absolutely loved our flowers! When speaking with the florist I told her that I wanted the flowers to capture my style – natural, a little romantic, and not perfectly constructed. My bouquet and my sister’s were a mix of blush, peach, white, blue, gray and green. Our centerpieces incorporated the flowers and greenery from the bouquet, along with candle light. The flowers were a very important part in the style of our wedding and added a beautiful, natural element to our reception space.
Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?
Jay and I wanted to do something a little different for our guest book, so we bought a few Polaroid cameras and a photo book for guests to fill with pictures of themselves. We had markers and wash tape available for guests to tape their photos into the guest book and leave a note. This book is one of my favorite things to look at and will continue to be a great keepsake for years to come.
Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.
For my dress, I knew that I wanted to find a dress with sleeves. I searched the internet for a few ideas and came across a Tara Keely by Lazaro gown – this was my dream dress! It had a lace long sleeve bodice and deep plunge neckline and slim fit skit. I added a belt to add a little bit of bling, which helped to complete the overall look. Jay wanted a classic look, so he choose to wear a black tux.
How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.
Jay and I met at a bar in Pittsburgh in November 2014. We went on our first date the following week and have been together ever since. In August 2016, I was traveling to San Diego, CA for a conference. After the first day of meetings, I went to my hotel room and called Jay to talk about the day when I heard a knock on the door. When I opened the door, Jay was standing there! I was so excited thinking that he came to surprise me and didn’t realize that he was starting to get on one knee and pull out a ring. It was such a surprise and so special, something that I’ll never forget!
What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?
While there were quite a few special moments on our wedding day, the most anticipated moment was walking down the aisle and seeing each other for the first time. There was just so much love and excitement at that moment that it’s hard to beat!
Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
The best piece of advice we can give in regards to wedding planning is to stay organized by creating a list of to do’s, a calendar of due dates, and prepare your tips/payments prior to wedding day. This type of organization helped us to stay calm and relaxed on the day of the wedding.
As for marriage advice, it helps to make each other laugh each day. Jay and I are constantly laughing and having fun, which makes every day together so enjoyable!
