Album Story – Kelly-Bobby Mint to Be Wedding
Kelly had been dreaming of a destination wedding on Mackinac Island for years. The island is one of her favorite places on earth and she pictured an intimate wedding ceremony at the Gazebo at Mission Point Resort. Her fiance Bobby had never been to the island, but he could see how much it meant to her to have their wedding there, so he agreed to it sight unseen!
A few months after they had secured their wedding date and booked their locations, Kelly and Bobby, along with Kelly’s parents made a trip to the island for a long weekend to finalize all the details. Kelly was a little nervous about the trip since it would be Bobby’s first time experiencing it. Within a few hours he could see what all the hype was about and was equally excited for their upcoming wedding.
They chose a date over Labor Day weekend so that guests could make a vacation out of it. The process of getting to the resort is, to say the least, unique. There are no cars on Mackinac Island, so to get to the resort, you’ve got to board a ferry to the island. Once you arrive, you load your luggage onto a horse drawn carriage and ride over to Mission Point.
The wedding day had some rain in the forecast, but we were ready for whatever was going to happen. The ladies spent the morning in the bridal suite at the Lakeside Spa & Salon sipping mimosas and getting ready while the guys took over a room in the conference center.
One of the most emotional parts of the day was the father daughter first look. Kelly’s father has some health issues that have him in and out of the hospital so we were all emotionally invested in the fact he was able to be there to walk her down the aisle. As soon as he turned around to see her during their first look, the tears started rolling. They were both emotional and I don’t think any of us had a dry eye. You can really see the emotion in the photos.
The couple opted to do a first look before their ceremony. They really wanted to have that time together to take the edge off the nerves that tend to come with the buildup of the day. I situated Bobby on the balcony at Mission Point that overlooks the lawn where the gazebo is and Lake Huron beyond, and then brought Kelly out. Almost as soon as she walked outside it started sprinkling. She ran up to him, grabbed his butt, they excitedly hugged and within a minute the rain really started coming and they sprinted inside.
The wedding coordinator started initiating the rain plan while we started on wedding party photos and some bridal portraits. At 30 minutes before ceremony time, the rain stopped and the sun started to come out and the resort, having just set up at the rain planned ceremony location, really came through and moved the whole setup back to the gazebo! I really can’t brag on them enough for making that happen so last minute. In the final moments, knowing how much it meant to Kelly and Bobby to get married at the gazebo, they did not hesitate to make it happen.
The sun broke through the clouds as the guests took their seats. The gazebo is so beautiful on its own there were no additional decorations needed. In the background you could hear the waters of Lake Huron lapping onto the shore. It was a calming and beautiful experience.
The couple’s dog Ivory was the dog of honor and escorted down the aisle by the Bride’s godfather. Her godmother read a piece about how marriage is like loving a dog that had everyone laughing and crying. The couple exchanged rings and shared a kiss to seal the deal.
After the ceremony guests were ushered to the reception location while the couple and I took a horse drawn carriage ride into town for some photos. As we rode down Main st. past the homes, B&Bs and shops, people cheered congrats to the newlyweds. When we got into the busy part of town, our coachman stopped the carriage so we could jump out and get a photo with the bustle of town in the background. Traffic, which was the busiest I’d ever seen it, stopped for us. Other carriages halted, bicyclers moved to the opposite side the road or stopped in their tracks and we owned the street for a few short minutes. The photos are some of my favorites from the day.
Our next stop was just past town on the boardwalk near Windermere Point overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. With a little luck we had perfect little sailboat cross into our path and add a little extra sweetness to their photos. The couple also took a few moments to love on the horses that were toting them around the island.
After the couple photos we road back to the resort for the reception. The party was happening in the Summit Room located over the lobby of the Mission Point Resort. The room features a 180 degree view of Lake Huron. It’s a show stopping view and the guests LOVED IT!
The couple had white linens with glittering silver table runners and mint satin napkins. Gold chiavari chairs added a chicness and warmth to the room. As a way to incorporate passed loved ones and the love stories in their lives, the couple had a generations of love table displayed. It featured photos of parents and grandparents. A special photo of the bride’s paternal grandparents (Marvel and Ernest) had a note about the blessing of sharing their wedding date. Marvel and Ernest would have been married 71 years.
The couple opted for a buffet style and the food was delicious. Later in the evening a donut and cider snack bar was set up and waiters served chicken and waffle bites. Guests took home sweet favors from Joann’s Fudge that were packed in the cutest “married on Mackinac” boxes.
The day was a dream come true for the couple and their families and perfect destination wedding experience we’ll all be talking about for decades!

Q6: How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.
A6: We met years ago when he was my waiter at TGIFridays. We then reconnected 5 years later via Facebook and would always run into each other randomly around the town throughout those 5 years. We started dating in August 2015 and we were engaged two years later. Bobby and I bought our first new build house together in 2017 and would go to the lot weekly to watch the construction of the home as it was being built. On 8/18/17, Bobby took me to see the house as all the drywall had just be put up and the front door was now on. We walked around the house and once I turned around from measuring for a couch, he said his romantic speech and got down on one knee and made me cry. We already started creating memories in our house as it was being built.
Q8: Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
A8: Best advice is to make yourselves happy since this is the only time you can be selfish. Family/friend drama should not ruin the wedding process and you have to let things go and not overwhelm yourself. Also, when going to find a wedding dress, go with a small group, otherwise too many people have opinions. Take everything in when you are at your rehearsal dinner and on your wedding day, because the day goes by way too fast. Enjoy every moment and detail that goes into it, but do not over spend. Have fun! Take a step back from the crowd and enjoy alone time with your husband while you watch everyone enjoying themselves at your wedding.
