The most important thing to us is family. We knew we wanted our wedding to be a celebration of our heritage and two families coming together. With that in mind, Epic Railyard was an easy choice for a venue because I come from a family of railroaders, My Great Grandparents met and fell in love when my Grandfather was transferred to West Virginia to work on the Virginian Railroad. When I saw Epic Railyard I knew this was the place!
Colten and I are very simple people and we don’t like a lot of formality so we knew we did not want anything too formal. I love vintage and lots of flowers so that’s how we came up with Boho Vintage Chic. It was very important to both of us to include family heirlooms and history into our day. From the vintage church pews to the window from the house my grandfather built for my grandmother, every detail was chosen with love and family in mind. It was important to us for our guests to feel as if they were at a large, family get together.
Traditions and family are very important to us and this was evident with several of the choices we made for our wedding. One of the most important and best-known wedding traditions is something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. My something old, borrowed, and blue was all wrapped into one treasured family heirloom of my Great Grandmother’s, her sapphire ring. This ring was given to her from her father and it was her mother’s engagement ring. During the great depression, the diamond was sold and much later replaced with her birthstone, a sapphire. My mother wore it in her wedding, as well as my older sister and now it was my turn to wear a ring that has been in my family for five generations and is a symbol of the strength and resiliency of the women in our family.
One tradition broken was the throwing of the bouquet. Instead of the traditional bouquet toss to all the single ladies, we opted for a generation dance and gave the bouquet to the couple who had been married the longest. This was our way of paying respect to those who came before us while celebrating love and marriage. It was even more special to us because the couple who had been married the longest had been together for over 52 years and were Colten’s grandparents, Leonardo and Ofelia Hernandez.
The most memorable moment for both of us was our last dance. While our guests were outside preparing for our sparkler exit, Colten and I had the room all to ourselves. The DJ played “our song” from high school and we danced, just the two of us soaking everything in and just being in the moment before it was all over. It was a very private and special time for both of us.
