Jay and I met as English majors in college – we’re huge book nerds who love to read. At first, we didn’t have a theme, and when asked would look at each other in confusion (sometimes we’d say “whimsy?”). Eventually our theme became obvious, growing from ideas that popped up as we planned; DIY book page boutonnieres, tables named after favorite authors, books as centerpieces, library card seating charts, a card box based on Terry Pratchett’s character The Luggage. BOOKS were our theme!
I love the vintage look, and incorporated that a lot. I did this mostly through family heirlooms. I wore my grandmother’s veil from her wedding in the 50’s, the cameo brooch my mom wore to her wedding was in my hair, and I carried the handkerchief my great-grandmother made for my grandmother’s wedding as well. Not being religious, Jay and I decided to ask a friend to marry us. It was a great choice, he did a phenomenal job! An accountant by day, comedian by night, his rendition of our falling in love was touching, sweet, and hilarious. Having someone who knew us well offer to get ordained and marry us was truly special.
The whole wedding came together because of the people we know and love. We had friends handle the videography, ceremony music, my sister created beautiful DIY projects, my artist bridesmaid created our table numbers, and since we couldn’t hire a day of coordinator we had multiple volunteers step up for us on the big day. The love and kindness shown by our friends and family had me tear up many times through the whole process.
Our reception was in a tent at the nature center and was a pretty clean slate with no decoration at all. So it was up to us to fill it – which was intimidating, but a great opportunity to be creative. We scoured flea markets/antique stores for vintage bottles, and rifled through used book stores for hardcovers by our favorite authors for the centerpieces. We made our own bunting to hang from the ceiling and made bookmarks as favors.
As I stated earlier, Jay and I love to eat. So we served our two favorite things: breakfast food and tacos. Weird things to serve next to one another? Maybe. Super delicious? Of course! We heard from many guests that the freshly made pancakes were particularly to die for, and went great with the fish tacos.
Knowing how much our friends like to dance, we worried the sweltering heat would slow everyone down. But once the music picked up, there was no stopping the party! Despite everyone becoming a sweaty mess (a groomsmen had sweat stains coming from his KNEES!), the dance floor was never empty, dehydration be damned. I changed into some super sweet Doctor Who TOMS for the reception and danced the night away!
The highlight was the big “yeah” cheer led by Jay’s ultimate Frisbee friends. One guest asked another “are you ready for a yeah?” Both guests turned and asked two more “are you ready for a yeah?” Those four asked four more. It built and built, getting louder, each addition asking “are you ready for a yeah?,” until everyone on the dance floor came together shouting “YEAH!” at the top of their lungs, drinks thrust upwards in a toast!
First off, the unplugged ceremony is the way to go! We asked all in attendance to keep their phones and cameras away during the ceremony, to be present with us as we committed to each other. We loved being able to look out at our guests during the ceremony and actually see their crying or smiling faces, and not a bunch of phones or cameras.
As for the planning, well, I’m a Type A personality – I like to do things myself and control all the tiny aspects because I know that if I do it then it will turn out “the right way.” But planning this wedding really taught me that you cannot do it all on your own. I tried doing it all myself the first few months of planning and after taking my frustrations out on Jay, realized I needed to accept help. And once I did, everything turned around.
Friends and family were all willing to help, offering so much of their time and hard work and resources. There were several times when I would think about how lucky we were to have this support system and would be brought to tears. So my biggest advice is to ask for and accept help. It will be scary – you won’t know if everything will turn out like the vision in your head. But just put trust in people who love you, and you won’t be disappointed.
