Q & A with the bride: Heather-Dan Wedding
Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?
My fiance and I wanted a simple yet personal ceremony. Since we are both not religious we had a close family member marry us and focus the ceremony on love and happiness. Our wedding was small, just 40 people so it was very intimate. We did not have a wedding party and the ceremony and reception were in the same room. We did not have a theme, but we did opt for a neutral color palette of white, cream, blush and gold.
Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?
The space was small but whimsical. Both the ceremony and reception took place in the same place, a slate patio with stone walls and a large tent covering it. Greens and ferns grew up the walls and were covered in twinkle lights. Large white round lanterns hung rom the ceiling and lanterns with candles were placed on the tables and some of the stones in the walls. The only decorations were the table runners. Each of the 4 tables were covered in white linen with a rose gold table runner. Atop each runner was a garland made of eucalyptus, blush roses and white flowers. Placed among the garland were large and small gold lanterns with candles. Also, placed in front of each seat was a crystal geode that held a photo of the person assigned to that seat. This was in place of traditional seating cards.
What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?
The flowers for the table were white, cream and blush colored. While my bouquet had small different white flowers. Because the space was small, we did not decorate with too many flowers.
Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?
Because we wanted our wedding to be small and intimate we had people close to us perform many of the wedding acts. A close family member married us and we said our own vows. A mutual friend of ours was the DJ and my sister-in-law was the photographer. This made the day really special since they all knew us so well, they knew what we liked and what would be perfect for the day. It was great to be surrounded by such close friends and family.
Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.
I tried on a few dresses in a style that I thought I wanted, but quickly realized that the type of dress I thought would work definitely did not. The last dress I tried on was shorter in the front and longer in the back and strapless. It was made of white linen and did not have any beading, lace or details. It was a perfect dress for my shorter frame. I had the dress tailored to just above the floor so that it did not have a train and therefore I did not have to bustle anything. I paired a thin crystal belt and rhinestone encrusted shoes with it. My fiance decided he wanted a light to medium tone grey suite. We had his suite custom-made with a fun polka dot lining in the jacket and on the vest. He wore a brown belt and shoes and a paisley tie.
How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.
My fiance and I met at work. We dated for a while and the proposal took place on our 1 year anniversary. After an anniversary dinner we came home and there was a small present and a note for me on the table. We had begun dating after he wrote me a letter, so getting another letter on our anniversary was fitting. At the end of the note it said that he was so happy I made the decision to start dating him and that he hoped I would say yes one more time. When I looked up from reading the note he was down on one knee asking me to marry him.
What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?
The most special moment was when we stood up in front of our closest family and friends and said our vows. We each wrote our own vows and they were not only testaments of our love for each other but our promises to one another and our hopes for the future.
Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
Our wedding was small and simple so planning took no time at all. There were very few details we had to decide on or even think about. This let us really focus on each other and soaking in the whole experience.
