Hannah & Ryan’s day incorporated everything: tradition, whimsy, nature, art, fun—you name it! From their ceremony in a gorgeous Catholic church, to their reception in the Kemper Art Museum, with photos in between in what appeared to be a magical land.
How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.
My maid of honor (Emilie Block) has been my best friend since kindergarten. Her brother and best man (Alex Block) became friends with Ryan in college. So I’ve known them and their family for a very long time. Ryan and the Block’s actually grew up just two streets away from each other. I grew up about 5 minutes from them. Alex and Ryan became friends at Regis University in Colorado. I briefly met Ryan in the spring of 2015 when I took a trip to visit Emilie. That summer we officially met in Westport. I actually told my mom the next day “I’m in love”.
Unfortunately four days after we met Ryan left for Europe for four months to do a work exchange program. We kept in touch writing letters and talking through Viber. In between his work program in Tuscany and Mallorca he went to Barcelona and invited me to join him on the Barcelona trip. I of course went. We fell in love on this trip. We made it official when he returned. Ryan and I moved into our apartment 5 months after we started dating.
Nearing our two year anniversary of dating, I hinted that if he ever proposed I wanted it to be private and personal. I wanted to be in our natural element. Ryan is the best secret keeper and didn’t tell anyone he was doing it (not even our parents…yes he got approval from my dad).
So on our two year anniversary he made us dinner at our apartment. While he was making dinner I took a shower and actually ate with my robe on and my hair in a towel. When we finished eating he told me to close my eyes. When I opened them he handed me a card and told me to read it out loud. As I got toward the end I realized what was happening. He got down on one knee in the middle of our apartment and popped the question. EVERYONE was surprised, including me. It was perfect.
Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
I’d say the more pieces you add to your wedding, the greater chance something will go wrong. This day is about getting married to the love of your life…not about all the stuff! Keep things simple and make sure your guests have fun…because honestly they won’t remember all the little details. Really all they care about is the food, being comfortable, booze, having a good bathroom and having a good time!! This day happens once so don’t let the little things get you…I forgot to wear my vail down the aisle. It bothered me for about 1 minute and then I let it go. Just look at your man in those moments and remember why you are there…soak it all in (even the stressful parts)!
