The bride and groom are both New York City police officers, but they love to be upstate enjoying the beautiful scenery and fresh air.
They selected the Barn at Liberty Farms for their venue due to the well manicured grounds, gorgeous wood walled stable along with the bare beauty so that they could make their DIY wedding come to life.
The bride spent countless hours searching online blogs to create an idea board with what she wanted for centerpieces, her cake etc. The bride and her friend spent the entire day before the wedding setting up the entire venue to ensure her vision was a success.
Q and A with the couple: Colleen-Thomas Wedding-Barn-Liberty Farms
Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?
We wanted our wedding day to be about us. Being together with our families, and everyone just simply enjoying themselves and feeling comfortable. You could consider our “theme” to be something along the lines of romantic/country/vintage. Our centerpieces involved fairy lights and outdoor elements, to tie in the countryside setting of the venue’s barn, where our reception was held. We used tan linens, with ivory lace overlays to break up the wood-tones of the room, and an ivory and pink floral napkin to accent the pink wine glasses, and accentuate the gold utensils and charger plates.
Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?
The venue was so perfectly designed for the style of our wedding, no DIY was necessary.
What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?
We got all of our flowers from an Etsy shop called “paulajeansgarden.” Paula did an amazing job creating beautifully colored dried, preserved, wildflowers for our entire wedding (arbor swags, bouquets, centerpieces etc.)
Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?
We really wanted to make the wedding about us and our life together, prior and after the wedding. To do this we had customized, napkins/cups/water labels created to add a little personal touch. We had the NYPD Emerald Society’s Pipes and Drums perform, which incorporated our Irish roots and careers. But, our favorite personalized touch to the wedding was our Specialty Drinks, they were named after our beloved dog and cat. People really seemed to enjoy ordering the “Grace” or “Gypsy,” which helped incorporate our fur-babies into our special day.
Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.
The second I saw Hayley Paige’s dress designs i knew I needed to have one in my life. I loved how she created invisible sleeves with embroidered designs, it makes an already beautiful dress feel so romantic, then having an illusion neckline, and plunging bodest, really made it sexy enough without being overbearing. The skirt was something I never thought I would go for, and yet I wouldn’t change a thing about it. It was a tiered, horsehair, ball gown which was beautiful, and fun, and super light! So i didn’t feel like I was lugging around my dress all night.
My Groom wore a light tan suit, with a navy and white polka dot tie, white shirt and light brown weathered leather lace up shoes. The groomsmen wore navy suits, and being that is day was not just about the Bride, we wanted the Groom to stand out just as much, because it was OUR day, not mine. To add a little twist to it, instead of the Groom and groomsmen matching, we had the Groom and his four nephews match. The boys, wore light tan slacks with navy and white polka dot bow ties/suspenders and socks.
How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.
Being lifelong New Yorkers we met at a Yankee game, and it was love ever since. A few years later we went on vacation to Antigua, where he proposed on our balcony at sunset, just the two of us in our PJs, nice and personal.
What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?
Our first look was the thing I looked forward to most. I always thought it was more for the Groom to get his emotional moment out before the ceremony, but it was so much more than just a look. It was the most special, emotional, magical moment of my life. Even with the photographer, his wife, hair and makeup, still in the house, I saw nobody but my Groom.
Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
All I can say is make it YOURS, and start early. Don’t leave things til the last-minute, and don’t listen to anybody’s opinions if they don’t agree with yours. Most importantly, be in communication with your partner, they may constantly tell you they don’t care but your wedding day is about BOTH of you. Don’t forget about your partner.
