We actually first met Christine and Tom in Washington D.C. When they contacted us, we chatted about an engagement session. They were having their wedding on Long Island but, currently lived in the D.C. area. We happened to be traveling through Washington D.C. and love photographing in different locations, therefore, we send out a list of our travel dates to all of our clients interested in engagement session, in case they want a session in a unique location.
Christine and Tom had a stunning wedding with approximately 130 guests. They had 6 bridesmaids and 6 groomsmen. The ceremony took place outside in the garden area with the reception being held inside. They had an amazing choreographed first dance that left their guest in awe. Christine did a lot of DIY planning all the decor herself (all signs, escort cards, centerpiece jars, photos). Christine and Tom said the best part of the wedding day was, “having all of our family together, since it’s rare.”
How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.
Tom and I met twice. Both times we were freshman at Catholic University. The first time I turned him down and we both forgot all about it. The second time was about a month later. Several groups of us were waiting on the metro platform and I went over to one of my guy friends to say hello and as I was walking away overhead Tom say, “who is that??”. We eventually got to talking that night and that was it.
The proposal was a complete surprise (although we were already dating for 9 years). After work on a Friday, Tom asked if I wanted to go to happy hour at this fancy hotel bar in DC called The Jefferson, so we did. It was a really nice day, so afterwards he said, “hey do you want to head down to the monuments?” Totally normal activity in DC. So we went to the Jefferson memorial, which just so happened to also be where we went on our first date as freshman. I didn’t connect the two because we go there all the time, but as we were standing on the steps he got down on one knee and I blacked out (lol!). He had a photographer hiding and everything, it was perfect.
Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
Since we took so much on ourselves – our lists were LONG. Maybe longer than normal. The closer we got to the day, the faster time went. We probably should have taken a little bit more time off beforehand since we had to pack everything up and travel up to NY. We were stuffing 500 cookies into the favor boxes 48 hours before the wedding.
The day before everything was off schedule and went wrong, but suddenly we were at our rehearsal dinner, whether we were ready or not. We literally put blinders on our eyes for a second so we could only see each others faces and said, ok breathe, this is our wedding, this is what we’ve been planning for, so be present. That was the most important prep we did for the whole wedding. All weekend we just kept reminding each other to be in the moment because we wanted to remember it all.
