I – Tea Ceremony:
A day filled with family, love and travel… Richard and Bella had their wedding on April 18, 2018 which started with a traditional tea ceremony at their home in Pomona. Bella is originally from Indonesia, where her family still resides and made the 20 plus hour flight from Jakarta to celebrate the special day, which we are so glad they did. The culture and energy everyone had was amazing, and the food blew us away. Indonesian food is one of the most vibrant and colorful cuisines in the world, full of intense flavor featuring spicy curried meat and vegetables such like gulai along with a plate full of rice was beyond our expectations. Eating with her family before the day kicked off, and hearing about the city they lived was an awesome start to the day.
II – The Ceremony:
Holy Family Church, where Bella and Richard regularly attend in Pasadena was the location for their I do’s in front of family and friends. After the ceremony inside we took to photos in front of the catholic church where cars honked, and random strangers shouted their congratulations at the newlyweds.
III – The Venue:
From Pasadena Bella and Richard’s family filled the car with multiple long vans and were on to the next location, we followed along as we made our way to the Anaheim Packing District. The renovated historic citrus-packing house has been converted into one of the most vibrant event venues and food staples for the city of Anaheim. The room was filled with hanging bistro lights, urban light wood tables, and stunning flowers from table to table. The food hall encompasses a variety of food vendors and is a must visit for foodies who are looking to explore the best food in Southern California. The wedding venue is separated from the food hall and perfect for intimate weddings in the heart of Anaheim.
IV – The Celebration:
After a few toasts and continuous good food and drinks, Bella and Richard displayed their musical talents by singing and playing the keyboard in front of their party. A combination of 5-6 songs that all tied into one another for the very end, with perfect pitch and harmony. Shortly after them surprising and shocking their guests, the bridal party had a surprise of their own. Sitting them down and dancing to Psy – Gangdam Style.
V – The Cheers:
To an awesome day and even more awesome couple, we wish you nothing but the best, enjoy the photos and memories from your amazing day! It was so cool being able to drive to all three locations and capture unique perspectives of all locations. From the tea ceremony with your aunts & uncles, parents & grandparents to the final celebration on the dance floor, Thank you for having us be a part of your wedding. Congratulations!
Q and A: Bella-Richard Wedding-Anaheim Packing District
Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?
We wanted the day to be very personal and intimate, we wanted it to feel like our friends and family are coming over to our home to celebrate our special day. With that said, our theme is very organic, homey and rustic, we incorporated a lot of bistro lights, greeneries and woodsy decor. Our color for the day is yellow and grey with lots of leaves and wood. We incorporated a little Chinese tradition with our tea ceremony and we did a Catholic holy matrimony.
Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?
Holy Family Church in South Pasadena is our parish and despite it being our home, we love all the architectural element that the church already has. It looks like a mini cathedral and not a lot needs to be done to make it pretty. The space speaks for itself. We simply added some aisle decorations and those are just some greeneries. Cooks chapel is a humble underground jazz club with a beautiful chandelier at the bar section. We added string bistro lights, garland centerpieces, votives and a touch of yellow with our napkins, party favors, etc. The bow tie napkins are DIY and they are designed to tie in to the placemat and to the party favors. I am so into details that I obsess over every single item on the table including the kids kit created to entertain our little guests throughout the night.
What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?
Yes, we incorporated mostly white, cream and yellow flowers that are high petals but we mostly requested for a lot of greens, leaves and garlands. They definitely added to the organic and personal feel of the wedding.
Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?
Yes, we chose our catering from the Kettlebar at the Anaheim packing district and we had Carmela Ice Cream Cart for dessert. We decided to personalize everything and stayed away from steak/salmon wedding menu selection. And for the cake, I designed and made my own wedding cake, it was definitely such an amazing experience making a cake for our special day. Favorite parts are definitely having fun with all our friends and family, food can be cold and ice cream can melt, but our hearts are so full and happy with the presence of all our loved ones.
Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.
We wanted to look like “us” and not overly dressed up that people couldn’t recognize us. I wanted my dress to be flowy and organic and comfortable yet romantic and pretty hence the lace and the tulle and the long veil. Richard opted to go with a suit instead of a tuxedo. We chose a greyish bluish tone for him so that it’ll go with either a yellow bow tie although at the end of the day he ended up wearing his favorite wooden iron man bow tie (he’s such a marvel geek). He has a custom suit made with our initials on the inside and he had wooden batman cufflinks with our wedding date engraved.
How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.
We met 8 years ago at church and started dating back in 2010. He plays piano and I sing at church when we became really close. We both gained more than 20 lbs of love (as we call it), since we are big food lovers and at that time I started culinary school, so I must say we get along very well. We got engaged April 2017 at Disneyland. He proposed at the Blue Bayou restaurant at the Pirates of Carribean ride, he was acting all nervous that day carrying around his backpack suspiciously. We are big fans of Disney (as you can see at our house), and it only seems appropriate that we get engaged at the happiest place on earth.
What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?
Despite the tension and stress, I gotta say that we were just looking forward to have a good time with all our friends and family especially those who came all the way from Indonesia, Canada, New York, etc. We felt so loved by everyone. I especially enjoyed getting ready with my bridesmaids and Richard enjoyed geeking out with his boys before the wedding.
Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
I am a person who obsesses over details and I wanted everything to be perfect, but at the end of the day, something will NOT go according to plan, and being able to push that aside, and focus on what’s really important is key. Try not to over think and trying to please everyone, I love being a good host but at the end of the day, people who are your real friends will be happy no matter what you serve them, no matter what color your dress is. And those who complain, will complain. Focus on the marriage, not the wedding. The marriage is a lifetime, the wedding is just one day. Choose your key vendors wisely and trust them to carry out the day, and so you can focus on marrying the love of your life 🙂 and plan your honeymoon! if you have to choose between having a reception or honeymoon, choose honeymoon!
