My name is Ashton and I’m a wedding photographer! While I live in Baltimore, Maryland now… I am originally from Charleston, West Virginia. I started my photography business there and worked many times with the Ray family. This included shooting Megan’s Senior photos as she left high school.
Flash forward a few years, and I receive a call from a gentleman named Jared. He was referred to me by Megan’s sister-in-law and mother and he was on a mission. He had purchased an engagement ring and he wanted to plan the perfect proposal. He had planned a trip to Baltimore and he requested my help in making it memorable for his soon-to-be fiance.
We talked about all of Megan’s favorite things and tried to incorporate a few of them. Things like sunflowers, her preferred candy, and a meaningful quote. Jared knew he wanted to propose after dinner, and he asked me to set up a rendezvous point with balloons. I may have gone a little overboard with balloons that literally spelled out “MARRY ME.” I set these up with the help of my husband and we hid amongst gathering bystanders.
The balloons awaited the walking couple as they left dinner. They crept slowly toward them, holding hands and chatting. The crowd thickened as Megan and Jared neared. Megan nearly walked past the set-up! Jared hesitated in his step and pulled her back, kneeling down and placing Megan into full-blown shock.
After a few moments, hugs, tears, and candid photos… Megan said yes. She also fully realized what was going on, that I was there to capture it all, and that we had been planning this for weeks. Ready for celebration was a basket of champagne, Lindor truffles, and confetti. The pair set off to dig in and start planning their new lives.
It. was. perfect.

When did you meet and where?
We met in September 2015 in Morgantown, WV.
Was it love at first sight?
No! After our first date, I figured we wouldn’t see each other again. He tried, time and time again to get us out on another date until the last time when he didn’t give me a choice. He just said he was going to pick me up, he gave me a time and said that I better be ready! He picked me up that evening for the Preston County Buckwheat Festival and even though it was a boring old country fair with cows and stale cotton candy, that was the night that the stars aligned and we literally fell head over heels for one another.
Who made the first move?
How did your relationship become “official?”
We decided we were finally “dating” after a late night date to a haunted house and terrible cold pizza from Sheetz.
How long were you together before you got engaged?
1 year and 5 months.
In length, how exactly did it happen?
On my birthday, we decided to take a weekend trip to Baltimore. It was a random decision, which are always the best! So, we were excited and automatically started searching for things to do and see. As Jared got the trip plans set up and we were packing to go, I made sure to sign us up for a historic ghost tour on Saturday evening. It sounded like a fun thing to do and could show us a lot that we wouldn’t see on a normal tourist day. Friday and Saturday afternoon were full of different adventures through places like the National Aquarium and watching roadside flame throwers at the Inner Harbor. As the day rolled around, we got dressed for an early dinner to give us plenty of time to stroll over to the Ghost Tour.
After dinner, Jared started rushing around finding other places he wanted to sight-see before our tour. I was getting nervous when I thought we weren’t going to have enough time to make it over there! He was dragging me into different stores and then decided to go see Federal Hill? Who needs to see a Hill when you already have plans??? I already paid for this tour!
Before I knew it, Jared was walking way too fast and was dragging me by the arm down the Inner Harbor. We were zig-zagging between tourists and suddenly he jumped down a row of benches that led to the front of the river’s boat docks. When he finally slowed down and I looked up, I saw a row of balloons sitting in front of a tree that spelled out “Marry Me”… at that point I was cracking up, figuring it was someone else’s proposal that we were going to laugh about. Nope. That was about the time that he stopped in his foot steps and I immediately realized I was wrong. It was mine!!
He slowly pulled me over to the balloons and got down on one knee…I was hysterically laughing and crying at the same time. By this time, I was completely ignoring the ring because my friend and photographer Ashton had jumped out of the crowd with her husband and began taking pictures! My head was full of thoughts, the first being, how on earth did Jared put all of this together when this trip was a random weekend excursion?? To this day, I still don’t understand! And no, we never made it to the historic ghost tour.
How did you celebrate?
Right after the proposal was over and Ashton had left, we headed straight for the ice cream shoppe on the Inner Harbor! We were both still elated, so ice cream is always the best celebratory option.
How did you settle on a wedding date?
Settle? More like eenie-meenie-miney-mo
When you imagine the day ahead, what are you both most excited about?
When we look at our upcoming wedding, we are both even more excited about heading to Ireland the following day!
Name three things you have in common.
We both work in the science field, we are both absolutely 100% obsessed with our dog and hopefully both hold the ginger genes (fingers crossed!!)
Give me three things you love to do together.
Traveling everywhere and anywhere
Hiking (with the dog…duh)
If there is one celebrity you could agree to invite, who would it be?
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
What’s your song?
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “The Rest of Our Life”
Tell me something weird about you guys!
It’s hard to narrow that down, but Jared and I have a constant wanderlust and always want to move and find new adventures and new places to live before we settle in one town.
