Every engagement shoot is special to the couple, but this one was extra-special to the photographer, Rebecca Gatto, too. The future groom, Jake Isenhart, is her brother; the bride, Valentina Chamorro, her future sister-in-law. Even the southern New Jersey location is especially nostalgic.
“Growing up, we were lucky enough to go on family vacations almost every summer, and my favorite was the Jersey Shore,” Gatto said. “Wildwood used to be our spot; now it’s Cape May, but either way there’s something magical about these little seaside towns that come alive in the summer.”
Jake proposed to Valentina earlier this year, on a trip to New Orleans. The pair is a modern couple, so they had already discussed what they wanted from the formal proposal: who should ask whom? What would the ring look like?
“We had planned ahead of time that we would get engaged on the trip, but he would do the proposal,” Valentina said. “We went to Cafe du Monde, the super-famous place to get beignets and hot chocolate. I could tell something was happening because he was being sweet and kept insisting on walking on the river even though it was really cold.”
Jake led her to an area near the river that was a little more secluded, since he knew she didn’t want the proposal to be public.
“It was dark out but there were lights all around,” Jake remembers now. “It was pretty, it was quiet, it was not crowded, it was personal. And it wasn’t a surprise, but it was a good moment for us to share.”
He proposed with her late grandmother’s engagement ring. Valentina says she knew from the moment she inherited it that it would be perfect.
“I don’t wear rings or jewelry much,” she explained. “It was the first piece of jewelry I really wanted to wear.”
The pair got engaged early in their vacation—their first solo trip without friends or family—so they could spend the rest of their time celebrating privately. Their engagement photo shoot, which took place on the 4th of July during a family vacation, was a way to bring that celebration to family and friends on their own time.
“Jake and Valentina do things their own way, so I wasn’t sure if they would even want engagement photos,” Gatto said. “It made me so happy to be asked, and to make new memories with them in a place that already means so much.”
