Q and A with the couple: Samantha-Bradley Engagement-Jefferson Patterson Park
Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?
We met in high school! I was a sophomore and he was a senior. I always thought he was so cute. One day, he messaged me on MySpace originally trying to date my best friend, Kayla!!! But the more we messaged each other, we met and he asked me to be his girlfriend!
What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. (example: pushing each other to new limits, love to travel, huge comic book fans, foodies, etc.) What makes your relationship unique?
Not everyone can say they are with their first love that they met in high school – that is what makes our relationship special. We also are like the same exact person! We have so many of the same interests and aspirations in life.
How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship? (these may often be the same moment, but aren’t always)
Although we started dating in high school in 2010, we have not been together for all of the 8 years. Brad ended it with me after only a year and a half in – he wanted to be a typical 18-year-old boy. He dated other girls. He would still text me. But when we weren’t together.
Eventually in 2012, I dated a boy and we were together 3 years. He even moved to Florida with me when I started college! While dating him, I still always had feelings for Brad. (He was my first love!) While I was dating this boy, Brad would text me and tell me he wanted to “get back together”. He said he finally realized what he had and wanted it back. He didn’t give up – for the entire 3 years, he would try to text me and message me, but I had him blocked. He would text and message my friends messages to tell me.
Eventually, the boy and I broke up in 2015. I unblocked Brad from texting and messaging, and we started texting and messaging again. I was still in Florida in college at the time. He wanted to make it work, he wanted to be in a long distance relationship. For 8 months while I was finishing college, we would take turns flying back and forth from Maryland to Florida once a month.
In December, I graduated and he flew down to watch. We then packed up my car and moved into an apartment together in Maryland. I knew Brad was the one because even though we were dating others, we were always on each other’s mind. He realized what he had and he was consistent in trying to get back together. He was willing to do a long distance relationship, just because he wanted to be with me again. We always push each other to be our best self, we make a great team together and I wouldn’t want to live this life without anyone else!
Give us all the details about the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise? What was the planning process?
He proposed to me on 4th of July in Cancun, Mexico. It was DEFINITELY a surprise. I was not expecting it! He knew I wanted to get engaged, but he would try to say “Not now”, “Maybe in 5 years”, etc. He would try to trick me! But the whole time, he had the ring! He was planning it for months!
It was not an extravagant proposal or speech (and it didn’t need to be), we were on the beach at our resort, walking at night. He told me to close my eyes because he had a surprise. I opened them, he was on one knee and said “Will you marry me?” And I said yes, of course. It was just him and I, which was special. I didn’t cry – I was so in shock and so happy!
Are you excited to start planning your wedding day? Do you have any ideas in mind yet?
Our wedding is in 4 months (OMG) and we have already planned it all! It has definitely been stressful, but we can’t wait for the day! September 1, 2018!
