Kendra and JC met while working together at a school. When they met, they knew this relationship would be different. They started having lunch together everyday and soon were inseparable after that. He proposed four years later.
Proposal Story: Kendra-JC Engagement-Old Lyme
“He made me go on a scavenger hunt. When I got back to school from the gym, he had one of my soccer players waiting with a bouquet of flowers and a card. In the card it said how we met at school four years ago and it was the best day of his life. Then there were instructions to go to the nail salon in town and that everything was paid for. He even taped in a 5 dollar bill with an arrow that said “for the tip”.
When I got there they gave me another card which said to meet him across the street where a dozen oysters and a cocktail will be waiting. He had Liv’s Oyster Bar in Saybrook (our first date restaurant) open an hour early and the bartender recorded the proposal.
After that he surprised me by having our friends and family join us!”
Q and A with the Bride: Kendra-JC Engagement-Old Lyme
Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?
JC and I met at new teacher orientation at Old Saybrook High School in Old Saybrook, CT. He was filling a role as a permanent sub in the district for a History teacher who was having her first child, while I was starting my first job in special education. We became fast friends, however we were only friends for most of the school year. We went on our first date at Liv’s Oyster bar in Old Saybrook, which became the same place JC proposed three years later!
What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. (example: pushing each other to new limits, love to travel, huge comic book fans, foodies, etc.) What makes your relationship unique?
JC and I are huge foodies, who are always looking to try the best new restaurants. We take this love for food on our many travels and adventures together. Our favorite place to visit thus far has been our trips to Napa, where we can indulge in both food and wine. Outside of the food world, JC and I are very competitive in nature. We both are lacrosse coaches all year, coaching for the same travel team and the same high school team. Our passion for lacrosse and sports has been a fun way to connect and keep us both in shape!
How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship? (these may often be the same moment, but aren’t always)
JC moved to Long Island for a job in sales after his first year of teaching. We decided to keep dating long distance, however it wasn’t really long distance since we would see each other every weekend. It was during that time that we knew he needed to move back to Connecticut and that we would look for a home together.
Give us all the details about the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise? What was the planning process?
My proposal was a surprise. We had just gotten back from a family trip to Maine, where I thought he was going to propose, but didn’t. I felt like if it didn’t happen in Maine it wasn’t going to happen til our next “big event.” However, to my surprise I came back to school from the gym with my special education students one day to find one of my lacrosse players in my room with a bouquet of flowers and a note. Inside the note it told me how happy JC was to have met me and that I had an appointment at a local nail salon where my next instructions would be waiting. After my manicure my nail technician gave me another card. This card said that there would be a cocktail and a dozen oysters waiting for me across the street at the site of our first date, Liv’s Oyster Bar. When I got inside I realized he had them open a half an hour early just for us and he proposed while the bartender recorded the whole thing. After our first drink our friends and family surprised me!
Are you excited to start planning your wedding day? Do you have any ideas in mind yet?
Our wedding was held at Jonathan Edwards Winery in North Stonington, CT. We were married between the vines on the perfect day, with the cocktail hour being inside the vineyard. The ceremony was tented with lots of fun lighting and drapery. We also had farm tables and lots of greenery. Everybody had an individualized place setting and it was everything we could have ever asked for.

Oh hey! I’m just realizing lately that I meet so many clients in small coffee shops who have NO idea what I look like… It doesn’t usually hit me until I see my couples scanning the room for their potential photographer. I’ve been trying to skip the selfies and show clients and friends more of my work/life, but I’ll try to make more of an effort to give you a familiar face to look for when we’re meeting. ☺️ 📷: @chadmaheux

Photogs – Do you have any strange rituals you do to prepare for a wedding day? For example, I try to stay away from iffy foods like sushi (even though it’s my fav) for at least 24hours before a wedding. I make sure to have at least one of my cameras with me the day before if I’m spending a day away from the rest of my equipment incase of a fire or break-in… AND if I’m wearing a dress to the wedding, I try to make sure I have shorts underneath (just in case🙈.) Do other photographers have these rituals or am I just the definition of preparation/paranoia?? Photo cred: @britthillphoto
