Album Story – Julie-Jacob Texas State Fair Engagement Photos
The Texas State Fair is definitely an iconic one! It’s something that people travel near and far to go to and is one of the largest in the world. I got the opportunity to go not once, not twice, but three times this year, and it was better and better each time. The last time had to have been the best because I got to photograph Julie and Jacob’s (SECOND) engagement session. We had so much fun roaming through the crowds, laughing about ALL the food we were indulging in, and getting butterflies in our tummies on the pirate ship ride. I cannot wait to photograph their wedding next May, because they are some of the most fun loving people ever ever. I really enjoy my time with them and I’m so glad it’s flourished into such a great friendship. Something I strive for in each one of my couples.
How they met:
Jacob and I actually went to UNT together, but never actually knew each other. My sorority got paired up with his fraternity our freshman second semester for Greek Week, we both rush the prior semester before (we were both single at the time), but CONVENIENTLY (sarcasm) he tore his ACL and then took the semester off to heal back home in Mansfield. In that time of the pairing, I got to know all of his pledge brothers, except the one that I needed to know…him.
My best friend, Peyton, who is my ‘little’ in my sorority and Jacob knew each other through mutual friends and followed each other on social media. Peyton and I took a girl’s trip just us two, to California for July 4th in 2018. It was on my bucket list to go to the famous Malibu Wine Safari (if you watch Big Brother, Holly was our tour guide so that means I am practically famous right?!) and meet Stanley, the giraffe. I have a thing for exotic animals and a good photo opportunity what can I say? Funny enough Peyton and I posted the exact same picture on social media and Jacob saw her post and says ‘he was taken away from the beauty of who was in it’. Not sure if he meant Stanley and I (he could have slid into both of our DM’s who knows), but thought I was the prettiest girl he ever saw and added me on social media (Instagram/Facebook). Just scrolling through my notifications like any normal day, I didn’t know who he was, saw we had mutual friends and accepted his request(s).
It took him from July to September to work up the courage to finally send the initial message all thanks to Mark Cuban. I have been a huge fan of Mark ever since Shark Tank. The way he can command a room and instantly have respect is something that I looked up too and vowed to myself that as soon as I graduated college and got my first bonus I would buy Dallas Maverick tickets. I also wanted to do something that would get Mark’s attention at a game, (aside from buying ridiculously overpriced tickets in the same section as him), I made a poster at Walgreen’s the night of my first game that I convinced the photo developer at Walgreens to give me for $30 instead of the $120 for the two large poster print outs. I printed one of him laughing and one of him mad that I could flip faces when a good/bad call was made. I cut his two heads out (heehee), slapped some hot glue on it and stuck a wooden picket stick in it and called it a day. I took that poster with me to every game for the next three years and got on the jumbotron, fan pictures and even two follows on social media from Mark (he is actually a really nice/helpful guy).
…Anyways back to Jacob! I was at a Mav’s game and took my poster along with me and posted a picture with my cardboard cutout and a cheesy caption and he finally got enough courage to message me about him too being and #MFFL. I guess those season tickets were worth it!
How he proposed:
My best friend Peyton who works in the wedding industry said that her friend who works for the ‘North Texas Bride’ Magazine needed some extras for an upcoming photoshoot that was supposed to be ‘bridesmaids around town’. The concept was fun spots in Dallas that bridesmaids could get their nails done and brunch at. We had a couple of friends who modeled for the magazine so I thought nothing of it and was super excited that she was picking me and our other best friend Jordan to get some professional pictures done together (I told you, good pictures are my thing).
I nervously had no idea what I was going to wear and both Jordan and Peyton did not really put too much thought into their outfits either, but we all decided to look cute and wear different shades of red and black together. Before leaving the house earlier that day I asked my soon to be fiance if he swore he was not proposing today and to pinky-promise-kiss me on it. I noticed he didn’t fully kiss his pinky-promise and called him out on it and he swore he was going to be playing video games all day. I was so sad because it had been raining basically every weekend in Dallas and this was the one day it was so sunny and pretty out. I thought what a shame to let a pretty day go to waste and not enjoy it with my fiance (sorry Peyton and Jordan).
Peyton said ‘Jennifer’ the head of the shoot was not going to be on site for the day, but that she had transportation, a videographer and a photographer booked with an agenda. Thinking ‘transportation’ meant an uber, I saw while exiting their apartment there was a Hummer Stretch limo for the transportation and I immediently ‘no filter’ blurted “this is exactly something Jacob would do!” I know Peyton in her head knew this was going to be a long day.
We get to the limo where we meet the videographer named “Kline’ (who was actually Jacob’s co-worker). Suspicious of what was going on, I noticed Kline’s shirt said “North Texas Brides” that looked a little worn in. Strike one, in my head that this was not the day I was getting proposed to. If this was all for me, his shirt would look brand new right? But the logo was a little ripped so I thought I should mentally take note of it. Kline then said we had to sign NDA contracts for the video/photo release rights. Strike two. “I am an idiot” I muttered to myself. There is noooo way this is it. This is all too fishy.
We arrive at brunch and I noticed that Kline is paying a little more special attention to me on the video shots. Not wanting to be uninclusive, I decided to not bring it up to Peyton and Jordan. I threw out a pattern interrupt and asked Kline as I headed to the bathroom if he “wanted to get a sick shot I had of me washing my hands” to be funny. He looked at me like I was nuts and thought I should probably let the suspicion go of getting proposed to that day while I was semi ahead and not wanting to round my strike three.
It was until the nail salon which was our second stop of the day before a bridesmaid dress try on, that my suspicion finally came to light. Peyton and I were in the bathroom and I kept getting notifications from my Nest camera that there ‘was someone in my kitchen’. Aka Jacob playing video games…or so I thought. Everyone knows that I have this camera and app on my phone since I always find our animals doing funny things. Peyton saw me open up the app and I saw that Jacob had people over and was mid-sentence of saying it to her and she panics and starts screaming that she just ripped her earring out of her ear. I looked at her non-bloody ear…it was not even red and thought ‘man the champagne from the limo has hit her quick’. She runs out of the bathroom with me behind her while she later told me she mouthed to Jordan and Kline “SHE KNOWS!”
We wrap up at the nail salon and Kline says he wants to stop at Klyde Warren Park..another one of my favorite places that Jacob and I would walk around and admire my obsession of the Dallas skyline. The first prettiest Sunday in months, there must have been over 300 people at the park that day. I was like “dang, these pictures are going to look so busy for the magazine”. We meet the photographer and she is wanting us to walk in the middle of the park holding hands and laughing, my go to ‘candid’ pose. All of a sudden I hear a “did you wear that to church?!” behind us.
I turn around in such shock and see my fiance with the bomb black long sleeve I bought him earlier that month that I told him he looked hot in earlier that day at church, wearing a huge smile on his face. Tears immediently rushed to my eyes as he started proclaiming his love for me and my 70 pound basset hound that he promised to take care of us for life. I shot my hands in the air and saw my dream ring in the lit up box and screamed ‘holy moly!’ from how big that was. Like wow, its a rock. Jacob said I was so mesmerized by the ring and what was going on, he had to ask me again while on one knee what my answer was. I think I said something sassy along the lines of “I do” or “duh”. I looked over and 30 of our closest friends and family were there to greet us. He even coordinated my parents/siblings coming in from Austin before they headed out of town a couple days later (another reason I didn’t think I was getting proposed to). Everyone that came to celebrate at the park, quickly said they had to leave to head back and I thought nothing of it and was only focused on the new weight on my left hand.
We rode the whole way back to the house in such giddiness that we were finally engaged, until I realized I forgot my purse at Peyton and Jordan’s apartment back in Dallas. Not wanting to ruin the moment I said we could go back to Dallas and celebrate with just us two. We laughed that everyone in our neighborhood (we live in basically Mexican Metropolis) probably thought it was a Quincenera inside the stretch hummer limo. As we rounded the corner, Jacob turned to me saying “no silly, we are not eating in Dallas. We are heading inside to keep celebrating at our house with all of the family and friends that were at the park and even more!”
“SUPRISE!!”, streamers and a whole ton of love opened as we came through the front door and I could not believe that my fiance pulled such a detailed and thoughtful engagement. Shortly after, I quickly shot a DM to Chris Harrison to remove my 4 year pending application for “The Bachelor” 😛
