Originally hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, it was only natural for Brianna and Ben to set their engagement session in front of a beautiful mountain backdrop. Lake Dillon Marina in Dillon, Colorado made the perfect place to do just that.
A self-proclaimed “paradise in winter and summer,” Lake Dillon boasts over five square miles of pristine fresh water, a rare feat for Colorado, and the lake is all surrounded by the majestic Rocky Mountains. It’s not uncommon for the Lake Dillon to be beautifully dotted with sailboats on a sunny day. Brianna and Ben could not have picked a better place to showcase their bold, nature-loving personalities.
Speaking of bold, Brianna wore a tulle skirt that was nothing short of enchanting. A flowy floral blouse was a sweet choice for Brianna’s romantic look. Ben even matched her with a pink ensemble, and his polka dot bow tie was the cherry on top. The chemistry between them was tangible throughout the evening as they went from meandering mountain trails to dancing under the rosy sunset.
Playful poses were aplenty, from Ben lifting Brianna in the air to the two of them jumping around by the lake. Clouds speckled the evening sky and beautifully caught the fiery colors of the setting sun. As the sun slowly set and peeked through between the mountain crests, Ben twirled Brianna around for a stunning shot. Again later, in the dark, they danced and Ben dipped Brianna in front of a dazzling dusk sky, which with the help of a small backlight, became uniquely stunning.
Q and A with the bride: Brianna-Ben Engagement-Lake Dillon Marina
Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?
Oh in a super romantic way! A mutual friend introduced us by way of a typical college party. Once time came to pick partners we noticed we were both wearing moccasins. So naturally, we became Team Moccasin. We dominated that night!
What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. (example: pushing each other to new limits, love to travel, huge comic book fans, foodies, etc.) What makes your relationship unique?
Ben and I are both very driven and very passionate (about most things in life, ha!). We recognize that we both need someone to push us sometimes and delight in challenging each other. But that being said, we hold the quiet moments with each other very high. We are insistent about things like shared coffee and crossword every morning and making dinner together.
How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship? (these may often be the same moment, but aren’t always)
I think for both of us, it hit around the time we moved in with each other (only a year in to dating!). With school, multiple jobs, and overall busy lives – moving in just wasn’t a stressor. If anything – it helped. I remember for me (Brianna), it hit me in a parking lot as we were walking home from a frozen yogurt date. Literally just walking through a parking lot, I looked over to see his hair flopping around in the sun, giant grin on his face and just like that – it hit me. I don’t know, sounds silly I guess! But I’m encouraged that 7 years later, that feeling still hasn’t faded.
Give us all the details about the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise? What was the planning process?
It was a surprise! We had started looking at rings but everything had just sort of dropped off. I remember texting my sister (who I had obviously told we had looked at rings) and being disappointed. Not that marriage was ever a big thing for us (we’d get to it, we were happy how we were, etc.), but man – once we started looking at those rings. . . It was almost all I could think about!
Things dropped off and we got ready for our vacation. A scuba diving trip in Cozumel. We shared a suitcase and a backpack and had a full trip planned. It also happened to include his birthday! We went to Tulum and came back for a special dinner. As we were getting ready for the dinner, he let me know that he had hired a photographer and was hoping that for his birthday we could have some professional photos taken of us. I thanked him for waiting until I was tan and excitedly agreed. The beginning was so awkward! I had no idea what to do, and we mostly laughed our way through it.
Midway through, on the dock, he made some joke and I cracked up. I turned around for half a second to try to take advantage of the wind to fix my hair and when I turned around, he was on one knee. With his collar stays box out. And there was a beautiful ring, instead, in his collar stays box. I was stunned. I cried. I was completely surprised (the suitcase we shared was NOT big!). I can’t remember if I said yes or nodded or what, but he put the ring on my finger and the next thing I know – I hear cheers and applause erupting from behind me. Not planned – a giant wedding party taking THEIR photos on the beach below us had just witnessed the entire thing. They began to cheer, the beach began to cheer, the bar began to cheer. I cried and laughed. I think he might have too 🙂
Are you excited to start planning your wedding day? Do you have any ideas in mind yet?
Yikes! We had a short engagement (4 months), so we’re already married! It was AWESOME!
