A few months back, I received an e-mail from the most adorable (and totally in love) girl, Babette, who was looking to take couples portraits. Usually most of my inquiries are for weddings or an engagement session. “Portrait sessions”, however, aren’t necessarily the most inquired, so I was certainly interested. (Also – totally no judgement since I am all for portrait sessions and actually have been toying with the idea of having a session done for Jordon and myself.. any reason for good photos makes my heart skip!????)
When I found out the rest of the story, I melted. I learned that Babette was looking to get some photos of her and her then boyfriend Lucas because he is enlisting in the army, and she wanted to have stunning photos of the two of them for when she missed him – my heart was SO happy and instantly I couldn’t wait for their session!
Babette went above and beyond planning out all the most adorable little details for their session – blankets, candles, tea lights (insert heart eyes here)… along with a few other surprises… oh you know… like an engagement ring!! With the perfect timing ever with our new date, (we had to push our original session date back due to weather), Babette and Lucas were actually engaged! Eek! I about fell off my stool when I heard about their engagement that had happened only two days earlier! (Though we all know that typical of clumsy Shauna just would fall off her stool – this time it would have been totally warranted)
Lucas was so incredibly in love with Babette the entire session, a total gentleman – he even offered to bring mosquito repellant that he had in his truck out for us (actually I am hoping it was mainly for me with hopes they didn’t get bit as much as I did… I have a record-breaking 19 mosquito bites from this session, and every last one was so worth it – just wait until you see below!) He couldn’t keep his eyes off of his gorgeous fiance. He was so kind, attentive, and calming to her any of her needs. Plus, he was totally GQ-ing it up the whole time and just completely rocked out the session.
It is completely evident that Babette and Lucas deserve each other. She is so sweet and kind-hearted. When we finally met and she told me how much she loves my blog and how it has helped her make some of her wedding day decisions, like whether or not to have a first look. I couldn’t have felt more humbled and honored. Babette was so completely smitten with Lucas and the chemistry between them was the definition of why I do what I do.
Being able to capture their relationship and friendship through their laughter and genuine love – knowing that someday their children will look at these photos of their mother and father – that is what fuels my passion to do what I do. When I have couples like this, I can’t help but to love, serve, and spoil them a bit (like with a blog post less than 24 hours after their session).
Q and A: Babette-Lucas Engagement-Tampa
Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?
We first met when we were in high school. We were actually on a double date, Luke with one of my girlfriends and I with my boyfriend at the time. Those relationships ended and a year went by when I ran into a very handsome lifeguard at adventure island who happened to be Luke of course, and my friends and I just about tried everything to get noticed by Luke haha. About two years after that we ran into each other once again at Hillsborough community college. I took the first step and approached Luke in the bookstore and we exchanged Facebook information and went on our first date about a week later. A place we go back to every single anniversary!!
What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. (example: pushing each other to new limits, love to travel, huge comic book fans, foodies, etc.) What makes your relationship unique?
Luke and I are big on love notes!! I gave Luke a box of “open when” letters about a year into us dating. Open when you have had a tough day, or when you want to take a walk down memory lane, or open on our wedding day, when we find out we’re expecting….. We use our bathroom mirror to write sweet messages to the other to just let them know we care. Like ” I hope your day is wonderful, I love you -L ” or I will write Luke a love letter and leave it in his car just for him to find on his way to work in the morning.
When Luke first talked about joining the army I couldn’t talk to him about my feelings without braking down. The only way I could tell Luke how much I loved him and would support him on every step of this journey was to write it all down and leave the note in his car. I’m thankful that we have already mastered the skill of our personal love language for when he’s deployed. Letters are something we both cherish.
How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship? (these may often be the same moment, but aren’t always)
If you asked Luke I think he’d say some other time but for me I would say about 6-7 months into our 3.5 years we have currently been together. We decided to take our first trip just the two of us up to his family’s place in NC. The mountain views were just breathtaking. I remember sitting up looking down on the valley and at the man next to me realizing that I loved him right there and I wanted to spend the rest of my days with him. We talked and talked that whole trip about our individual values we both now hold very near and dear today and being with each other was so natural, even today!!
Give us all the details about the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise? What was the planning process?
With all the stress and challenges that work and Luke joining the army were giving me, Luke came to me and said he wanted to take me on a weekend getaway and go to the beach. Now, I LOVE the beach. Luke….. HATES the beach. So I was a little bit confused as to why he would offer to go in the first place, his comment was beaches have bars. I’m sure this was to throw me off of his trail now in hindsight. So after we spent all day in the sun by the water, we knew we wanted to watch sunset. I’m a sucker for a good sunset. Luke and I started a walk down the beach where we stopped and started looking at a man in the water who was fishing.
Luke pointed just past the man and said “wow did you see that fish just jump, look out there keep looking …” after making myself feel awkward looking and not seeing any thing, Luke turned me around and started to tell me the most beautiful sentimental things followed by him using my whole name and got down on his knee to ask for my hand in marriage. To top it all off he called my brother and his best friend who were hiding in the bushes who got the whole thing on camera.
To top it all off I had set up couples photos with Shauna Lynne Photography (who was hands down amazing to work with) for my then boyfriend and I so that l could have beautiful photos to cherish while he was shipped somewhere overseas. Our original date was rained out so we rescheduled for a Monday night. I’m going to assume Luke put some plans into action or just lucky because he proposed just two days before our scheduled couple’s pictures now turned engagement session!!!!! Every thing in that 72 hour period couldn’t have been more perfect.
