From the bride: Alison-Ryan Engagement
Ryan and I met in the summer of 2013. At the time I was in a relationship and he was going off to physician assistant school. It was a quick introduction at my best friend, Lauren’s college graduation party. I thought nothing of it to be honest.
Flash forward 6 months later, I found myself single and out to dinner on Thanksgiving Eve with Lauren and our other friend Kristin, for a girls night out. Lauren kept telling me I needed to get back out there and date and that she didn’t want to see me upset any longer, so, began riddling off the names of single guys she knew. When she stumbled upon Ryan she mentioned that I had met him before and to be quite honest, I felt so silly saying I had no idea and didn’t remember him.
I then asked her if she had a picture of him, thinking she’d pull up his Facebook profile, but instead she texted him asking for a selfie saying “Send me a good picture, I’m selling you to my friend. You’ll thank me later.” (I didn’t find out she said this until years later!!) When she got the picture, she proceeded to show me. I thought he had a nice smile so I said, “Okay” and she quickly snapped a picture of me and sent it to him. Not too long after, he was finding me on Facebook and adding me as a friend; I of course made him sweat it out a bit.
While we ate dinner I asked Lauren about him, because I really didn’t remember much from when I “supposedly met him.” She then reminded me of what I mentioned in the beginning; that we met earlier that year at her graduation party and that she quickly introduced him to everyone as he was leaving for PA school. So I stopped her mid sentence and asked, “Well where is he from?” to which she responded “New Jersey.”
Now I have nothing wrong with New Jersey but I also was working through an ended relationship and wasn’t about to start something long distance, but New Jersey isn’t too far right? Well, then she said, “He doesn’t live there anymore. He’s in Boston now, in PA school.” My first reaction in my head was, “Nope, not gonna do it!” How could I even think of being in another relationship and on top of it he’s over 3 hours away? But, I threw all caution to the wind figuring what else could I lose at that point and accepted his friend request when I got home that night. The next morning he messaged me on Facebook, and the rest is history.
I never in my wildest dreams could think that this is how “my love story” would go, but go it did! Boston began to have such a special place in our hearts because of how much of it is a part of the beginning of our dating story.
Our first “real” date was in the North End and the first time I walked around the city it poured, and at the time I couldn’t have cared less! We didn’t have a lot of money at the time, but you don’t need much when you have good conversation and a beautiful city to walk around.
Fast forward two years later, I decided to move up to Boston while he was in his last year of school. The traveling every other weekend with work and school was crazy enough, but now with his upcoming rotations it was going to be impossible to see each other. So I uprooted my life, found a great job in a town outside of the city to teach and we continued dating.
However, about 6 months into my moving to Boston we were planning a trip to Connecticut to visit with his family that was in town from Hawaii. We also planned for a “festive” fall hike in the morning with his sister before meeting up with his family for lunch.
The dress code was casual, but I wanted to make a good first impression. So there I was, hiking up the trail trying to look nice in the middle of Fall, while I’m sweating. We get to the top and Ryan takes us to an overlook area to see “the foliage.” His sister snaps a quick picture and faster than my brain can register he’s telling me how he want’s to have “that Saturday morning feeling every day of his life” and he proposes! I’m so in shock, of course say yes, and we head down to meet up with his family first, then my family later in the day, and our friends later on.
Two years of wedding planning later and a move to Connecticut, we were married on July 22, 2017 in the most gorgeous church at The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and had the most amazing reception at The Barns at Wesleyan Hills, with my friend Lauren as my Matron of Honor, because without her, this never would have happened.
Sometimes life has unexpected twists and turns, and while in the moment we don’t know why, we find out later. It has been the most incredible, unpredictable journey, and I cannot wait to see where it continues to take us!! Thank you, Brooke Brady, for capturing so many of our incredible memories that we will surely cherish for a lifetime!
